The Solvent

Tetra Extraction Technology (TET) uses solvent, which is approved for use in food and pharmacological industry. American Food and Drugs Agency (FDA) considers the solvent to be GRAS – generally recognized as safe substance.

Tetrafluoroethane HFC-134A (R134A) is hydrocarbon solvent, environmentally friendly and safe to ozone layer. It is non-explosive and non-flammable.

The solvent is used as propellant gas in oral medicine and it is allowed and safe to spray it directly to your lungs, there are no known toxic effects. Tetrafluoroethane is not included in Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete Ozone Layer.

Tetrafluoroethane is safe to use in extraction technology. It works using low pressure and temperature. Extraction is possible using room temperature, lower temperatures but also higher temperatures. These factors are controlled and set according to the needs of raw material that is being extracted to prevent degradation or destruction of extracted substances that are sensitive and delicate to temperature or pressure.

Boiling point of the solvent is -26.4 ˚C (-15.52 ˚F)

Tetrafluoroethane is hydrophobic which allows to extract even FRESH MATERIAL, thus creating space to use extracts that do not lose many precious substances in process of drying.

Tetrafluoroethane is very volatile and its low boiling point secures practically non-measurable amounts of otherwise safe solvent (0.02 PPM stated in scientific literature)

Solvent’s pH level is another advantage, when in contact with water, humidity acids are not formed and extract quality is not de-creased by acidic hydrolysis such as when CO2 extraction is used. Extract does not have shortened expiration.

Safety in storage of solvent and extraction technology is another advantage. Road transportation as well as river, sea and aerial transport is safe as stated in classification codes ADR/RID, IMO-IMDG and ICAO/IATA.

Tetrafluoroethane has many more qualities and advantages that make it extremely suitable for extraction of herbs, spices, fruit and mushrooms either fresh or dry.
